Furnace Age The typical life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a good idea to start furnace shopping now. Buying a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in a hurry. Give yourself a bit of time to research and weigh all of your possibilities. Increased Gas or Electric Bills Furnaces lose efficiency as they get older and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been correctly maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be spent on a new, more efficient system.
